| Early in 2007 I obtained copies of two sixteenth-century manuscripts from the Torre do Tumbo archives in Lisbon. I knew the documents contained information I needed for my work in progress, but the handwriting in them proved very difficult to read. While struggling to interpret them I was fortunate to become acquainted with Marta Pascoa of Proventus, who has extensive experience in preparing palaeographic transcripts of sixteenth-century documents. | For the remainder of the year Marta and I worked closely and fruitfully together. I would tell her which parts of the documents I wanted transcribed, and within a short time she would email the transcription, often with additional comments on the state of the document or its contents that enhanced my understanding of what I was reading. Marta became an invaluable and sympathetic collaborator in my work and our collaboration continues to this day. |
